Makita XPS01 X2 36V Tracksaw

Check out the awesome X2 special at ACME TOOL!
What can I say? I love track saws. I’ve been using them for years. They make many hard tasks easier. Once you have one it’s impossible to go back. It changes something inside of you. Even stubborn doubters have changed their minds in as little as one use.

  I used to think I had no need for  a track Saw. I felt like a straight edge and a couple of clamps were enough to make nice Straight cuts. I used to say, “Track saws are too expensive for what you get.” How wrong I was. There is more to it than just making straight cuts. The first track saw I used was a cheap one from grizzly. It wasn’t very good. The dust collection was horrible and the splinter guard was off by 1/8″ but it was good enough that I soon realized that I needed a tracksaw in my life.
  I originally wanted a Makita since I was against Festool pricing at the time. The problem was that I couldn’t find a Makita anywhere within a 3 Hour drive and I wanted to try the Saw before buying.
  My favorite lumberyard Schutte Lumber in Kansas City,MO invited me to a Festool event and I decided to go ahead and check it out. I have to say I was hooked! I bought the TS55 Saw which is the smaller Festool and a CT36 dust extractor. The Saw served me well for about a year and then the cordless TSC55 came out. I was so happy with the cordless one I rarely wanted to use the corded Festool.

 Shop at ACME tools for the TSC55

  I still wondered what the Makita was like so I ordered one last year. I was very pleasantly surprised. I found that it was excellent in many ways. It has noticeably more power than the Festool saws. It makes the same quality of cuts as the Festool saws and it cost a lot less. In fact knowing what I know now, if I had to do it all again I would not hesitate to buy the Makita first.

   What about the XPS01 cordless Makita? It is the newest one on the market and let me tell you it is very impressive. It does everything all the other track saws do but it is also nicer to use than most. That is very important to me. If I truly enjoy using a tool then my day goes much better. This saw has a long list of things that stand out. First off there is no cord. No one is going to walk by your workbench and trip llon the cord causing your saw to crash to the concrete floor below.  The short track is identical in length to the Festool 55″ but the long track is almost a foot longer making it much nicer to use on full sheets.  To me it has the most comfortable main handle and side handle.  It has the smoothest plunge feel of all of the track saws I have ever touched. It glides on the tracks like nothing else on the market. It has the nicest bevel set up . It has a -1° stop as well as a 22 1/2° positive stop and a 45° positive stop and it will go up to 48° positive stop. It is about 1 lb lighter than the Festool cordless. It is much much more comfortable to use than the DeWalt. It uses an ultra thin kerf blade and powerful brushless motor with auto downshifting so it can blast through material easier than just about any other cordless or corded track saw I have used.

Check this link below for a video of it in a tough cut. Please keep in mind the dust bag was full before the cut and a lot of the dust is coming out the bottom of the saw because of it.

😱😱😱 He didn't just do that! Oh yes he did!! I was perfectly happy yesterday 😎in the knowledge that I had a favorite Tool of all time. Now I'm not so sure 😐 . . Please check the replay of my live feed last night for a good all around comparison of the saws. It will show up at the top of your main page . . This Makita really has me going. I knew I liked it a lot but 😳😳😳I can't believe how it out muscled the Festool in this Tool fight!! It has me rethinking my priorities on a track saw. It's so smooth and powerful. @makitatools nailed it on this one. It is definitely the saw to beat. If you need a track saw this will do everything you need very well and at a very reasonable price. 349.00 bare tool or 499.00 for the kit. 🔥🔥🔥I even added a Link to order from @acmetools in my bio. 👆👆👆 . The @freud_tools blades were great! They really made this fight fair. They also cut much faster than either stock blade. I was surprised to see they are thicker than either Festool or Makita factory blades.    Makita is famous for putting great blades on their saws from the factory. At first I was a bit concerned about the saw having a 52 tooth ultra thin kerf blade. I knew it was a really good idea for cutting power and run time but I wondered if it might flex more in the cut and leave a rough edge compared to a full kerf sawblade. After using it on the job for building and installing cabinets and breaking down full sheets in the shop I realized that those fears were unfounded.
   The 52 teeth do a very nice job of making very clean cross cuts even in thin veneers. I have used it mainly without the 2 mm scoring feature and the results have been quite good. It is even cleaner when you use the scoring setting.  If I find myself in a situation where I am using an expensive piece of material I may be more inclined to use the scoring feature. Even though I don’t use the scoring feature much it is good to know that it is there.

   I think the blade is made by Tenryu. It is extremely similar to their ultra thin kerf blade. Whether it is or is not it is a wonderful blade and I wish it would work on my cordless festool without removing or changing the riving knife. (I do believe the Tenryu version comes with a thinner riving knife for the Festool Saw)

   Another huge advantage of the Makita XPS01 track saw is they have an unequalled range of compatible high performing woodworking and carpentry tools on the 18 V LXT and X2 36v platform. I really feel that the X2 36 V system is an Excellent solution to provide heavy duty tools without forcing users to go to a larger battery system.

   There are a couple of things I would change if I could.  I would like to see an offcut splinter guard like on  the Festool TSC55. (I think it is patented so I don’t see that happening) That piece is probably the most important thing that sets the Festool apart from all other saws on the market. It increases the quality of the waste side of your cut and it  increases dust extraction with or without a vacuum extractor.   The next thing I would add is a good dust bag.  I know it is meant to be used with a vacuum extractor but the saw catches an incredible amount of dust with just a dust bag.  People have been modifying the Festool TSC55 dust nozzle to fit the Makita so they can use the Festool bag on their Makita Saw. I have not done it yet and I am not sure that I will. I have not seen a nice clean modification yet.  I have been using the Dewalt flex volt miter saw dust bag on my Makita.  It works well but it needs to be dumped frequently.  It would be nice to be able to use it with one battery in a pinch as well.

   Some people say it needs a riving knife but I honestly don’t miss it. I have never had a kickback with it or the corded version on sheet goods or solid wood. Even worked and twisted word has not been a problem with this saw. Please don’t feel that I am against riving knives because I am not. If the saw was sold with one on it I would not remove it. I definitely like a riving knife on my tablesaws when I am not using overhead guard with a built-in riving knife.
   The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages with the Makita XPS01 36 V cordless track saw. If I found myself without a track saw tomorrow because of theft or fire, this unit would absolutely be the very first one I would buy . To me it dominates in performance, features, compatibility and value.

    Thanks for the in depth review dude. I seriously have to consider a track saw. Especially now that makita makes a cordless.

      You are welcome Aaron this was a fun one! I really like the saw and I have a hard time deciding if I like this one better or the Festool because they are both so great.

    These saws look amazing. I have not had the opportunity to check one of these out other than through various online reviews. I stepped up to the Kreg Accucut a month ago, before that I was also using a jig I built. The Accucut works awesome but can be a little cumbersome using a standard circular saw. Stepping up to a dedicated track saw would be a great addition. Love your reviews and your Instagram account. I reference you all the time when talking about new tools. Thanks for all you do! 9. Very thorough review, I appreciate that. The 36 V platform is a really nice feature that frees it up to use on work order items and times you don’t want to pull out everything in the van. I just bought the TS 75 otherwise I may have to have one immediately. Thanks for the review.

    Without having to purchase a new battery system the X2 36V is by far the best solution for users of cordless heavy duty tools.

  11. This saw looks (and sounds from your well done review) like it would be an excellent addition to my setup, as I have been in the Makita ecosystem for (15?) years. I bought the TS75 last winter, and it has been a gamechanger, I can only imagine a smaller cordless version of a tracksaw would be excellent. This would be super usefull in my future endevors, and I’d love to convert more people to the ways of the track. Does it work on the festool track? Anyway, noce review.
    Thanks, Keith

    • thetoolpig

      Yes it definitely works on the Festool USA tracks. Mine required a tiny adjustment to be lined up exactly with how my Festool saws were already adjusted to contact the splinter guard. Anytime you have more than one saw on a rail you probably will need to adjust one or the other

    Are you limited to only makita’s blades ?

    • thetoolpig

      That’s a really good question. This so I will use just about any blade that is made for the track saws. You will lose a 1/4” cutting depth by going to a Festool blade or equivalent but the arbor is the same.

    I have used the festool track saw a fair amount and really enjoyed it. But in the recent past with all the other companies releasing their own versions of track saws I have been wondering how they stack up. The makita track saw was the only one I really saw giving the festool a run for it’s money and I think this review has solidified that for me. Thanks for all of your extensive tool reviews they are always great to check out.

    Great review. I gotta say I do enjoy having the drop down riving knife on the Festool saws but having used the Festool and Makita corded track saws before I don’t find its an outrageous difference.

    I always felt like the fist generation makita track saws were slightly more shaky on the track than festool. The cuts always came out straight regardless but in hand it was just a small thing I noticed, hopefully that resolved now though. I enjoyed the festool and making track saws far more than the dewalt ones based on design and comorty factor. The dewalt one just feels slightly unwieldy. It’s great that Makita is putting out such great saws at a price that’s accessible for those that don’t want to or just can’t afford to jump into the festool system.

    Anyways…great review thanks for being so thorough.

    Great review on a great saw! I have tried Makita cordless saws and I realy like them!

    @drumcarver

  111. Travis Danek

    Thanks for your detailed review on this saw. I have wanted a track saw in my arsenal for some time now and have gone back and forth between Festool and Makita, corded and cordless. I am a Makita guy and a Festool dreamer. This has made up my mind which to buy. Now I need to decide, corded or cordless for the Makita.

    Killer review. Thanks. I’ve been waffling for a while on the ts55 and sp6000j1 and now it looks it will come down to makita corded vs cordless… aye…. thanks for all the comparisons.

  114. Eli Gfell

    Thanks for the great write up, super helpful and informative. Have used the corded festool version many times but dont own one. Would love to get my hands on a makita as I already own some cordless makita stuff.

    Not only is this a fantastic saw, but I find myself steering others to it instead of the competition. I love my dewalt, but I would really love the ability to put these two beasts side by side! @completelycordless

    Excellent review, and great price point or a quality saw compared to festool.

    First off I love all you reviews/videos. You offer great non bias advice that I appreciate and have lead me to purchasing new tools that have greatly improved my efficiency and quality of work. I have the corded version currently and have recently bought into the Makita 18v line with their new 18v X2 10” miter saw. This cordless version of the current track saw I have now will be a great addition. @lucky_by_design

  123. Unreal saw would love to get my hands on one maybe one day @brothersventures

    I have makita corded track saw, I’m really happy to have a tracksaw,when I don’t have room to setup tablesaw it works great ,when I got it there wasn’t cordless tracksaw in market so I would’ve been happier if I had cordless one👍@vita.wood

  132. Totally on board with the concept behind a track saw. huge time saver wether cutting down doors clean and untouched or just making plywood rips for a header. You gotta have one if you can’t win one! @burminator on Instagram also @6_8_10

  133. Craig

    Fair Review. You mention the ultra thin kerf blade that comes factory installed, but I’d be curious to know if you can still use other after market blades like freud, cmt, tenryu, oshlun …etc

    @cm_concepts

    • thetoolpig

      Yes sir👍🏼 it uses the same arbor as the corded Saw as well as Festool. These blades do have a slightly deeper cut than the Festool and Freud.

  134. Matthew Aton

    This thing looks incredible. I’ve used the festool, it worked like a charm. Can not wait untill I get my hands on one of these. Maybe with a little luck and a great opportunity from @toolpig. Thanks for sharing.

    Looks like an awesome saw. I will get one soon. Hopefully

    @t.ernsberger

  139. Mark Kelley

    Excellent review. I have been wanting a track saw for some time now but unfortunately because of the price it usually goes to the bottom of my tool list. Is it meant to replace a table saw? I see so many people with them now I feel like I am not part of the elite club. Would make a great addition to my work shop and help get some built in built. @mkelley0983

    • thetoolpig

      It does many functions of a table saw. For repeated rips a table saw is easier. This thing makes the harder cuts easier. It breaks down 4×8 sheets like butter.

  156. Thanks for the honest review Paul. I know you were very hesitant to recommend this over the festool but it goes to show the honesty in your reviews. My boss has the corded Makita track saw, I borrowed it for a task I needed to do on an LDC project. The entire LDC crew were surrounding me, in total awe at this amazing tool and what it can achieve. Not to mention how much I loved using it. It never jammed or slowed down once. I was cutting through 40m of red ironbark decking in one run. Made my job a whole lot easier. But the hardest part was giving the tool back at the end of the day. So I would love one of these!

  180. Troy Duquette

    I’ve listened to all your thoughts on this saw thoroughly and I’d have to say I agree, I didn’t know it had a scoring tool? Sounds very cool! For me the idea of a riving knife is mental, it just makes me think I’m cutting straighting just by knowing it’s there ;-). I like having two of everything when I’m able one day just for having two setups for different uses! If I’m doing anything with a drill, I’ve always got two in use if not 4. I like having the luxury of multiple setups all the time! I’ve got my eye on about 6 or 7 makita tools that will one day make it in my van! ( along with a few festool as well ) one day! 🙂 @nad_n_troy

    I bought the corded version a year ago, cant explain how much this changed the game. I did however buy the Metric version…..anyone have a link for purchasing an imperial gauge? My primary cordless platform is Makita, started with the J Spec TD170D Impact driver and I never looked back. And the Makita cordless router.. too good to be true. Crazy how much power that thing has.

  219. Toolpig! I can’t believe you’re doing a giveaway of this saw. It’s my all time favorite tool. I’d never give mine away. lol

    Anyway, I agree with your thoughts and review on this saw. I never thought I’d buy one because of its price, but I couldn’t resist how efficient and productive I’d be with this saw. I actually got the corded version last year, and when I saw you demo the 36V this year, I got buyer’s remorse. Well, I upgraded to the cordless one and BOOM, what a huge difference the omission of the cord makes. I love using this saw even more. I get the precision of a big huge high quality table saw with essentially a small circular saw, but now with the convenience of it being battery powered.

    I implore everyone to consider getting this tool.

    Paul, please let me win this. My son’s really jealous of my saw. I’ll give it to him. He’s really interested in woodworking, and he made some awesome things in woodshop class.

    *also, in regards to modding a dust bag to work with the dust port… I used a bag from one of my Makita miter saws and luckily found an adapter from a broken house vacuum and it all fits together. It collects a lot of the dust. So now my track saw is cordless and hoseless!

    Excellent review that covers all main points. I used a track saw for the first time earlier this summer and was blown away at the the functionality. Having a small shop doesn’t allow for a large equipment, but this would be the perfect tool. This would also help create new opportunities for myself and those I help with their projects. Thanks for making such a great product. @jasonloushin on IG.

  257. seriously have had this kit in my amazon wish list for months now. i have already bought into the Makita battery line and all the reviews of this vs. Festool make me want this one even more.

    Looking forward to more great reviews

    I wondered about the lack of the riving knife so that is great to know your thoughts on it. Most people I’ve spoken to about the Dewalt vs the Makita day Makita hands down until Dewalt makes some improvements. I love my the Dewlat tools that I already have but I’m willing to add a new platform and can certainly use one of these for so many projects I currently have in the works. And even better Acme is running a smoking deal on it right now so good time to buy!!

    Thanks for the review!

  259. Mark Rawson

    Looks like a good portable option to a table saw. Would be cool to own one. @mrawson27

  260. I’ve been dying to get one but now I want it even more now. Damn you, haha.

    @madebyglew

  261. Awesome review and tool. Like because I am on the Makita platform already. Need it to breakdown plywood sheets for cabinet builds. Thanks again for the valuable info.

    I’ve never owned a track saw but I’ve had my sights on getting one for a while. After I built my first table I knew I was bit by the woodworking bug. I’d love to start replenishing my Makita collection with this amazing tool. Fingers crossed.. @steve_anderson_

  264. @chicagoflagandwood_co

    Sweet. I need one of these to square up pieces without having to go all the way to my inlaws house to use their table saw! This would make my life 10x easier lol

    Man, I would LOVE to have a saw like this!! I’m trying to start a small remodeling business, and this would be a great tool to have!! I agree about the festool price point, but when Makita came out with one, I knew I wanted that one as I am already a Makita customer. Thank you for the great review, toolpig! Keepem comin’

    Great review! I’m a huge Makita guy and wrestle with a corded track saw every day in the shop. Love the idea of a cordless track saw. My instagram is @chrishaney22

    I’ve loved the corded one, but the short cord gets annoying. I completely agree definitely more power than the ts55 and with the right sharp blade the saw not having an off cut splinter guard is not much of an issue. Great review!
    @andrewmpoole

  277. Matt cafua

    This is a pretty awesome detailed review . Nothing like getting the scoop from someone who adctually uses the products . I’m in love with the track saw system !! 😍

  290. Josh

    Really nice in depth review. I am between the makita and dewalt tracksaw. The makita seems to get rave reviews, but I am already into the dewalt platform and it gets good reviews as well.

    I’ve used the corded one before. Was blown away at how light it was. Was expecting to be heavier than my dewalt circular saw… nope! Completely surprised.

    pretty sick tool. Would love to add that to my makita collection

    Thanks for the write up. My dad is either going to get this or the tsc55 I will show him this. If the makita came out 6 months sooner I might have gotten it but I am happy with my tsc55
